Anna Karolina Orzelska

Anna Karolina Orzelska (23 November 1707 – 27 September 1769) was an adventuress and Polish szlachcianka (noblewoman), the illegitimate daughter of August II the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, by Henriette Rénard.

The King-Elector August II the Strong met Henriette Rénard in Warsaw on 1706, where her father André Rénard, a wine merchant from Lyon, had a saloon. Most historians agree that at first, Henriette didn’t know the true identity of her lover. As a result of the liaison, in November 1707 a daughter was born, Anna Karolina. August did not learn of her existence until a year and half later. Henriette married the Paris businessman François Drian shortly after Anna Karolina’s birth and moved to France, where she grew up.

For a long time, the girl lived in Paris with her mother in complete obscurity without the support of her father. However, in 1723, her half-brother, the later Count Frederick Augustus Rutowsky, found her. Anna Karolina followed him on his return to the Dresden court, where the sixteen-year-old beauty was presented to the King official jerseys. On 19 September 1724, August the Strong officially acknowledged Anna Karolina as his daughter and gave her the title of Countess Orzelska (Polish: Hrabina Orzelska, German: Gräfin Orzelska).

The first time that she appears in a document was on 21 November 1726 during the Diet of Grodno, at which the King personally signed the donation of the Blue Palace to her, which became Anna Karolina’s official residence.

Anna Karolina became one of Augustus’s most beloved children, not only because of her exceptional beauty, but also because of her improbable and extraordinary resemblance to her father. Without formal intellectual training, she nevertheless proved to be an excellent addition in the court life.

The court of August the Strong had the most scandalous reputation in Europe and encouraged the Countess’s behavior, which was considered scandalous according to the official moral of the time. Contemporaries noted her tendency to drink, smoke tobacco, and have numerous affairs. Anna excelled in riding, hunting, and dancing. The Countess frequently appeared in men’s clothing and even in military uniform. Some sources alleged that August the Strong made his own daughter his favorite tempered glass bottles; however, this cannot be proved.

In 1728, while King Frederick Wilhelm I of Prussia was visiting Dresden, the Countess Orzelska met his son, the Crown Prince Karl-Frederick (the future Frederick II the Great). She became the first (and, probably, the only) mistress of Frederick’s life. In early 1729, Orzelska secretly arrived in Berlin in order to spend time with the Prussian heir. He dedicated verses and musical works of his own composition to her. Some believe that Orzelska, during her liaison with Frederick, carried out the tasks of reconnaissance nature.

In 1730, the Countess obtained from her father 300,000 thalers as a dowry and married with Prince Charles Louis of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck – younger brother of the reigning Duke Frederick Wilhelm II- in the city of Dresden, on 10 August of that year. They had one son soccer training socks, Karl Frederick (b. Dresden, 5 January 1732 – d. Strassburg, 21 February 1772), future General Major of the Saxon Army. Her husband would become Duke after their divorce.

However, after three years of unhappy marriage (1733), Orzelska requested a divorce; from this moment, the couple began to live separately: Karl Ludwig in Königsberg and Anna Karolina in Venice. Inclined to adventure, the Countess participated, until the last days of her life, in a variety of activities which were considered scandalous.

She died in the French city of Grenoble aged 61, and was buried in the Church of Saint-Louis, in the Chapel of Saint-Jean-Baptiste.

Jumpers is a play by Tom Stoppard which was first performed in 1972. It explores and satirises the field of academic philosophy, likening it to a less-than skilful competitive gymnastics display. Jumpers raises questions such as “What do we know?” and “Where do values come from college football best uniforms?” It is set in an alternative reality where some British astronauts have landed on the moon and “Radical Liberals” (read pragmatists and relativists) have taken over the British government (the play seems to suggest that pragmatists and relativists would be immoral (Archie says that murder is not wrong, merely “antisocial”). It was inspired by the notion that a manned moon landing would ruin the moon as a poetic trope and possibly lead to a collapse of moral values.

George Moore is a faded and slightly foolish philosophy professor employed at a university whose slick, exercise-mad Vice-Chancellor Archie Jumper forces a tumbling and leaping curriculum on the faculty. One such flipping prof, McFee, is shot dead in the cabaret chaos of the opening scene, setting off a suddenly very urgent philosophical duel on the moral nature of man. Caught in between is Dotty, George’s disturbed wife and Archie’s “patient.” Dotty, a former student of George’s, ended a semi-successful stage career when the sight of astronauts on the moon unhinged her sanity. According to Dotty, the conquering of the moon revealed the human race—once scientifically and spiritually the center of the universe—as “little, local.”

The play was first performed by the National Theatre Company at the Old Vic Theatre water glass bottle, London on 2 February 1972 with Michael Hordern and Diana Rigg in the leading roles of George and Dorothy. Peter Wood directed the original production and Carl Toms designed its sets and costumes.

The play premiered on Broadway on April 22, 1974, at the Billy Rose Theatre and closed on June 1, 1974, after 48 performances. Directed again by Peter Wood, it featured Brian Bedford and Jill Clayburgh. Bedford won the Drama Desk Award soccer tee shirts, Outstanding Performance.

In 1984 Nicholas Hytner directed a production at the Royal Exchange, Manchester with Tom Courtenay as George, Julie Walters as Dotty and John Bennett as Archie handheld water bottle running.

A revival directed for the Royal National Theatre by David Leveaux opened in London’s Lyttelton Theatre on June 19, 2003. The show transferred to Broadway on April 25, 2004, playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, and closed on July 11, 2004 after 89 performances and 23 previews. The Broadway show featured Simon Russell Beale as George and Essie Davis as Dotty. The play received a Tony Award nomination for Best play revival.

How to Dress to Impress for a Lunch Date

Looking for an impressive outfit for a lunch date and beyond? Whether lunching during a work break or meeting on a leisurely day off, the objective is the same — present an honest style statement with your comfort in mind. Struggling with uncomfortable underwear or a coping with a constrictive dress skirt can keep your mind off the important things, like getting to know your date. For a lunch date, you should look attractive without appearing overtly sexy.
Wear a fun dress like a sheath or shift dress. Unlike a skirt, you don’t have to worry about a dress hiking up or resting unevenly on your hips. A basic dress plus a few pieces of jewelry or a flattering belt looks trendy and impressive. A knee-length dress is appropriate for a casual or dressy lunch.
Choose jewelry suitable for daytime like a cuff bracelet or small dangling earrings. Don’t wear too much jewelry. Avoid wearing club attire like large hoop or chandelier style earrings or a dozen clinking bracelets. For a lunch date, dressy casual is a good guideline to follow.
Pair your dress with a fitted jacket or shrug. Removing your jacket once he arrives is an impressive power move that suggests you’re in to him.
Wear comfortable shoes like cute flats or a wedge with a low heel. Pay attention to your toe nails if you wear peek-a-boo shoes. Small details count. Finish your outfit with a light spritz of perfume. Do not go overboard with the scent though; many people have allergies.
Select a pair of flat-front dress pants for the date. Stick with dark colors like navy blue, black or gray. Khaki pants also make a good choice for a daytime date.
Wear a V-neck shirt tucked into your pants. V-necks elongate the neck and make men look taller, more masculine. Choose a color that complements your slacks, like black, heather gray or light blue. If you prefer, wear a neat polo shirt with tan khakis.
Slide a thin black belt around your waist. Avoid over-tightening your belt. You want to be comfortable for your lunch date. If wearing brown pants, wear a leather belt.
Select shoes to match your shirt/pants combination. Loafers, boat shoes or even dress shoes are appropriate for a lunch date. Unless you are dining beach side, avoid wearing sandals or flip flops to your date. Finish your outfit with a single spray of your signature cologne.
